Heated cycling gloves or thermal gloves: how both work, how they differ in everyday use and when each one is worth it.

Warm fingers at the push of a button: heated cycling gloves sound like the perfect winter solution. But heating also means a battery that needs charging, more weight at the wrist and more involved care.

Here we compare heated gloves with good thermal gloves and show when heating is worth it and when a well-insulated glove is enough. Up front: we do not sell heated gloves ourselves, we sell thermal gloves.

How heated cycling gloves work

Heated gloves contain thin heating elements, usually in the back of the hand and in the fingers. The power comes from a battery that sits in a pocket at the cuff. You choose the heat level with a button.

How long the warmth lasts depends on the heat level, the outside temperature and the battery. On the highest level the battery runs flat much faster than on the lowest. Once it is empty, only the insulation of the glove itself remains.

How thermal gloves work

Thermal gloves do not heat, they hold on to the warmth of your hand. A fleece lining traps still air, an insulating layer slows heat loss, and the outer material keeps out wind and wet. This works without a battery and without a time limit.

Why wind and wet cool your hands down so quickly is explained in Cold fingers while cycling.

When heated gloves are worth it

  • You ride long distances in hard frost, where even well-insulated gloves reach their limit.
  • Your fingers cool down quickly even though you wear warm gloves and keep your core warm.
  • You are prepared to charge the battery before every ride and carry a little more weight at the wrist.

When thermal gloves are the better choice

  • You commute or ride for up to a few hours, where a battery would only add effort.
  • You want to feel brake and gears precisely, which a slim glove does better.
  • You want to wash the glove easily and not have to think about charging.

For 0 to 10 °C: Thermo Gloves 3.0

The Premium Thermal Bicycle Gloves 3.0 keep your hands warm between 0 and 10 °C. The ThermoCore fleece is 15 % thicker than in the previous model, yet the glove stays slim. The outer material is wind- and water-repellent.

Down to –10 °C and in the wet: PolarTherm Winter Gloves 2.0

The PolarTherm Winter Gloves 2.0 work with three layers: ThermoCore fleece inside, 3M Thinsulate in the middle and a waterproof, windproof outer layer with an 8,000 mm water column. That keeps you warm down to –10 °C, without any battery.

You will find both models compared directly in Thermo 3.0 vs. PolarTherm 2.0, and all tested models in the Cycling gloves test 2026.

3 tips that help with any glove

  1. Start warm: Put your gloves on indoors. Cold hands in a cold glove hardly warm up on the way, not even with heating.
  2. Store them dry: Let the gloves dry at room temperature after the ride, not on the radiator. A damp glove insulates less well.
  3. Keep your core warm: If your upper body is cold, your body cuts back on blood flow to the hands. What belongs in your winter kit is listed in Winter clothing for cyclists.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the battery last in heated gloves?

That depends on the model, the heat level and the outside temperature. When buying, check the manufacturer’s figure for the level you actually want to use, not just the lowest one.

Can heated gloves be washed?

Usually only after removing the battery, and only as the manufacturer specifies. Thermal gloves without electronics are easier to care for.

Are thermal gloves enough at –10 °C?

Yes, if they are made for it. The PolarTherm Winter Gloves 2.0 keep you warm down to –10 °C and are also waterproof.

Can I return the gloves if they don't fit?

Yes. You can test our products risk-free for 30 days. Shipping is free and takes 1–3 days.

Conclusion: For most rides in autumn and winter you do not need heating, you need good protection against wind and cold. Down to 0 °C the Premium Thermal Bicycle Gloves 3.0 are enough, in frost and wet weather the PolarTherm Winter Gloves 2.0. You will find the right size in our guides Winter cycling gloves for women and Men's winter cycling gloves.
