Two degrees in the morning, a headwind, and after the first kilometre your fingers are burning. Many men's winter gloves are made for skiing or a walk: thickly padded, but so bulky on the handlebar that you can hardly feel the brake and the gears.

Here you will learn what warm gloves for men need to do on the bike, how to find the size for broad hands and which model suits your route.

What a winter glove has to do differently on the bike

On the bike you sit in the headwind while your hands rest almost motionless on the handlebar. They produce hardly any heat of their own, and the wind quickly carries away what is there. A cycling glove therefore has to block the wind and hold the warmth first of all. At the same time it must not be so thick that you can no longer modulate the brake precisely.

Why your fingers are the first to cool down is explained in our article Cold fingers while cycling.

5 things men should look for when buying

1. Size: broad hands need room at the fingertips

If the glove is too tight at the fingers, it compresses the lining, and compressed fleece barely keeps you warm. If it is too big, cold air stays at the fingertips. Measure your palm at its widest point, without the thumb, and compare the value with the size chart on the product page. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one. Our winter gloves come in sizes S to XXXL.

2. Wind first, then water

For dry commuting days, a windproof, water-repellent glove is enough. If you also ride in rain, slush or frost, you need a waterproof glove with a membrane. A wet glove loses its insulation, no matter how thick it is.

3. Grip and feel on the handlebar

An anti-slip coating on the palm holds the handlebar securely, even when it is wet. A slim cut lets you modulate brake and gears precisely. That matters on a road bike and off-road just as much as in city traffic.

4. Breathable instead of sweaty

If you ride fast or climb, your hands sweat too. If the moisture stays in the glove, it cools down on the next descent. A breathable material lets it escape.

5. Touchscreen and reflectors

Touchscreen fingertips on thumb and index finger save you from taking the gloves off when you check the navigation at a traffic light. Reflective strips on the back of the hand make your hand signals visible in the dark.

Down to 0 °C: Thermo Gloves 3.0

The Premium Thermal Bicycle Gloves 3.0 are made for 0 to 10 °C. The ThermoCore fleece is 15 % thicker than in the previous model, yet the glove stays slim enough for safe braking. The outer material is wind- and water-repellent, drizzle simply runs off.

Below zero and in the wet: PolarTherm Winter Gloves 2.0

The PolarTherm Winter Gloves 2.0 keep you warm down to –10 °C. Inside there is ThermoCore fleece, 3M Thinsulate insulates in the middle, and outside a waterproof and windproof layer with an 8,000 mm water column protects your hands. The cuff is 2 cm longer than on the previous model and closes with Velcro.

You will find both models compared directly in Thermo 3.0 vs. PolarTherm 2.0, and all tested models in the Cycling gloves test 2026.

3 tips for warm hands on long rides

  1. Start warm: Put your gloves on indoors. Cold hands in a cold glove hardly warm up on the way.
  2. Keep them on during breaks: If you take your gloves off at a stop, you start the next stage with cold fingers. Keep them on as long as you are outside.
  3. Keep your core warm: If your upper body is cold, your body cuts back on blood flow to the hands. What else belongs in your winter kit is listed in Winter clothing for cyclists.
