For back pain when cycling, choose a saddle that fits your riding position: upright on a city, trekking or e-bike, the Alpensattel 3.0 Comfort PRO; sporty, the Alpensattel 3.0 Sport PRO; stretched out on a road or gravel bike, the Alpensattel 3.0 Race PRO. Add the right saddle height, a level saddle and, for bumps, a suspension seat post.
The saddle alone does not fix every back pain. Here you read what often causes it, which bike saddle for back pain suits which position, what suspension does and how to set everything up in five steps. This does not replace a medical check.
Why does my back hurt when I cycle?
Usually several things add up. These six causes are the most common:
| Cause | Typical | What you check |
|---|---|---|
| Saddle too high or too low | The hips rock while pedalling, or the back rounds | Saddle height |
| Saddle tilts nose-down or nose-up | You slide forward and lean on your hands, or the pelvis tips backwards | Tilt, ideally level |
| Saddle too narrow or too hard | The pelvis rocks, and the lower back compensates for every movement | Saddle width and padding |
| Handlebar too low or too far away | The back is stretched long, neck and shoulders tense up | Handlebar height and reach |
| Shocks from rough roads | Hits from potholes and cobblestones travel through post and saddle into your buttocks and back | Tyre pressure and suspension |
| Weak core muscles | The core tires early and you sag into your back | Training off the bike |
How to check your position step by step is covered in The right riding position on a bike.
Which saddle suits which riding position?
The more upright you sit, the more weight rests on your sit bones and the wider the saddle can be. The further you lean forward, the narrower it should be so it does not get in the way when pedalling.
| Position | Typical bike | Saddle |
|---|---|---|
| Upright | City bike, trekking bike, e-bike | Alpensattel 3.0 Comfort PRO |
| Sporty | Touring bike, sporty trekking bike, leaning slightly forward | Alpensattel 3.0 Sport PRO |
| Stretched | Road bike, gravel bike | Alpensattel 3.0 Race PRO |
- Upright: Alpensattel 3.0 Comfort PRO. 21 cm wide, 610 g, up to 140 kg. The wide base spreads your weight over the sit bones in an upright position.
- Sporty: Alpensattel 3.0 Sport PRO. 15.5 cm wide, 350 g. Narrower, so you can pedal freely in a sporty position.
- Stretched: Alpensattel 3.0 Race PRO. 14 cm wide, 370 g. Slim for the stretched position on road and gravel bikes.
All three have reinforced 3D Memory Foam+ with a Pressure-Balance hard gel insert that keeps the sit bones from sinking in too deep, and are 100 % waterproof. You can measure which width suits you in a few minutes: Measure your sit bone width. For e-bikes there is more in the e-bike saddle guide.
Does a suspension seat post help with back pain?
If bumps are your problem, it can help: the Alpensattel Suspended Seat Post absorbs hits under the saddle before they reach your buttocks and back. It does not make up for a wrong position, you still set height and tilt yourself. The key facts:
- Travel: 45 mm
- Firmness: adjustable to your weight and riding style
- Diameter: 27.2 mm, with included adapters for 30.9, 31.6 and 34.9 mm, so it fits from 27.2 to 34.9 mm
- Approx. 500 g, length 350 mm, permitted total weight 120 kg, for MTB, e-bikes, trekking, gravel and road bikes
What a good post must offer is shown in the suspension seat post test. Whether a suspended saddle is enough instead of the post is covered in Bike saddle with suspension.
How do I set up saddle and riding position for back pain?
- Saddle height: A starting value is inseam length times 0.885, measured from the centre of the bottom bracket to the top of the saddle. Seated, your leg is almost straight at the bottom without the hips rocking.
- Tilt: Set the saddle level, for example with a spirit level. If the nose points down, you slide forward.
- Fore and aft position: With the cranks horizontal, your front knee sits roughly over the pedal axle.
- Handlebar: Arms slightly bent, shoulders relaxed. If you have to stretch or your back rounds, the handlebar is too low or too far away. Higher and closer often helps.
- Only one change at a time: Change one value in small steps and ride a few routes before touching the next. After fitting a suspension post, check the saddle height again, because it adds some height above the frame.
A strong core helps too: it carries your upper body so your back has less work to do. Which exercises suit you is something to clarify with your doctor or a physiotherapist.
When should you see a doctor or physiotherapist about back pain?
A better setup does not ease every pain. Have it checked if:
- the pain stays or keeps coming back despite an adjusted position
- it radiates into your leg, arm or buttock
- you feel numbness, tingling or loss of strength
- it occurs at night or at rest, or began after a fall
If you notice paralysis or problems with bladder and bowel, seek medical help immediately. This article gives guidance for setting up your bike and does not replace a diagnosis.
Conclusion: Choose the saddle by your position, set height, tilt and handlebar properly and cushion rough paths with a suspension post. You will find all models under Bicycle saddles. If the saddle does not suit you, you can test it risk-free for 30 days.
