Potholes, cobblestones, roots: every bump travels through the seatpost straight into your seat and back. A suspension seatpost absorbs part of it before it reaches you. But not every post suits every bike and every weight.

Here are seven criteria you can use to check any suspension seatpost yourself, before you buy and after you have fitted it.

What a suspension seatpost does

The post absorbs bumps under the saddle, exactly where your weight rests when you sit. You notice it most on bikes without rear suspension: trekking bike, city bike, e-bike or gravel bike. On rough paths and long distances you ride more smoothly.

Whether a suspension saddle could be enough instead of the post is explained in Bicycle saddle with suspension.

If you want to use the post against back pain, Bike saddle for back pain explains how it fits with saddle and riding position.

7 criteria for the right suspension seatpost

1. Diameter

The post has to fit your seat tube exactly. You can usually find the diameter engraved on the old post. Common sizes are 27.2, 30.9, 31.6 and 34.9 mm. If the post does not fit directly, an adapter sleeve makes up the difference.

2. Travel

More travel absorbs bigger bumps, but too much feels spongy when pedalling. For everyday riding, touring and gravel paths, medium travel is a good compromise.

3. Stiffness and rider weight

The suspension has to suit your weight. If it is too soft it bottoms out, if it is too hard it barely moves. An adjustable stiffness lets you tune it yourself. Also check the maximum total weight.

4. Length and insertion depth

The post must sit deep enough in the frame. Respect the minimum insertion mark. Also check that you can reach your saddle height, because the suspension mechanism adds some height above the frame, especially on small frames.

5. Weight

A suspension post is heavier than a rigid one because it contains a spring. On a trekking bike or e-bike that hardly matters, on a light road bike it does more.

6. Material and play

A good post is made of sturdy aluminium and has no sideways play. The test: hold the saddle by the nose and carefully move it left and right. It should not wobble.

7. Compatibility with your bike

Check whether the post is approved for your type of bike and whether your saddle fits the clamp. Most saddles with standard rails can be mounted.

How to check the post after fitting

  1. Sit on it: Sit on the saddle normally. The post should compress a little, but not all the way.
  2. Test ride: Ride over a kerb or cobblestones. The bump should arrive damped, without the saddle bobbing up and down as you pedal. If it bobs, set the stiffness a little firmer.
  3. Retighten the bolts: After the first rides, retighten the clamp bolts to the manufacturer’s specification. How to fit it step by step is explained in Mounting a seatpost.

Frequently asked questions

Is a suspension seatpost worth it?

Especially on bikes without rear suspension and on rough paths. It damps bumps under the saddle and so takes load off your seat and back.

Which diameter do I need?

The diameter of your seat tube. It is usually printed on the old post. Our post is 27.2 mm and comes with sleeves for 30.9, 31.6 and 34.9 mm.

Does a suspension seatpost fit an e-bike?

Yes, if the diameter, length and maximum total weight fit. Our post is approved for e-bikes, and the maximum total weight is 120 kg.

What if the post doesn't fit?

You can test our products risk-free for 30 days. Shipping is free and takes 1–3 days.

Conclusion: Before buying, check diameter, travel, stiffness, length and weight limit; after fitting, check compression, bobbing and play. If you are looking for a post with 45 mm travel and adjustable stiffness, you will find it in the Alpensattel Suspended Seat Post.
