Yes, you can ride your e-bike in winter. With a few simple steps, the battery stays healthy, the bike stays safe and you stay warm. The key points: store and charge the battery indoors, check tyres and lights, wash off the salt and wrap up hands and body well. On an e-bike you move less than on a normal bike, so you get cold faster.

Here you will find our tips for battery, technology and clothing, a checklist for the first cold morning and answers to the most common questions.

How do you protect the e-bike battery in winter?

Batteries do not like the cold. Below freezing, the range drops noticeably, and charging in the cold harms the battery. These tips keep it in shape:

  1. Store it indoors: After the ride, take the battery inside and keep it at room temperature.
  2. Charge it warm: Only charge it once it has reached room temperature, never straight after a cold ride.
  3. Insert it just before riding: That way the battery starts the trip warm.
  4. Use a neoprene cover: A battery cover keeps the warmth in for longer while you ride.
  5. For a longer break: Store it half charged and cool, but frost-free. The exact values are in your manufacturer's manual.

Tip: In winter, plan for less range and use a lower assist level. You stay warmer yourself, too.

What does the e-bike itself need in winter?

Area Our tip
Tyres Slightly lower tyre pressure for more grip, studded tyres on ice
Lights Check front and rear lights, in winter you often ride in the dark
Visibility Reflector triangles on the rim, frame or helmet make you visible from the side
Brakes Have them checked before the season, wet roads mean a longer braking distance
Chain and contacts After riding on salted roads, clean with lukewarm water, dry, oil the chain
Saddle A water-repellent saddle cover keeps it dry when the bike is parked outside

Important when cleaning: no pressure washer on the motor, battery or contacts.

What clothing do you need on an e-bike in winter?

On an e-bike you pedal less and produce less body heat. At the same time, you often ride faster than on a normal bike, so the wind chills you more. That is why we recommend layering:

More in Cold fingers when cycling, in the winter glove comparison and in Winter clothing for cyclists.

Do you sit differently on an e-bike in winter?

Many people ride shorter distances in winter, but in thick clothing and with stiff, cold muscles. A saddle that puts your weight on the sit bones and an upright posture feel especially good then. For e-bikes we recommend the Alpensattel 3.0 Komfort PRO. Which saddle fits your e-bike, you can read in E-bike saddles 2026 or find out with the saddle quiz. On cobblestones and frozen paths, a suspension seatpost absorbs the bumps.

Frequently asked questions

Can you leave an e-bike outside in winter?

The bike yes, the battery no. Take the battery inside and protect the saddle with a water-repellent saddle cover.

How much range does an e-bike battery lose in winter?

It depends on the battery, the temperature and how you ride. In the cold, range drops noticeably. So plan a buffer and charge the battery at room temperature.

Which gloves are good for an e-bike in winter?

Down to 0 °C, the Thermo Fahrradhandschuhe 3.0. For sub-zero temperatures, snow and rain, the PolarTherm Winter Handschuhe 2.0, warm down to –10 °C and waterproof.

Can I clean my e-bike with a pressure washer in winter?

We do not recommend it. Use lukewarm water and a sponge, so no water is forced into the motor, battery or contacts.
